Highly paid courier jobs in the UK - really?

If you had a van or large car and the goods insurance you could start under your own steam and ask regular courier companies for work. I have done courier work but mainly for an national company but I still had self employed status and they just pay you for each mile - you still have to pay your fuel and insurance.
