Should blacks be called African Americans during a police call?
serious problems can arise When the police are looking for a black person, dispatchers never use the term African American anymore because it causes problems, African Americans look different, have different physical facial features and have an African accent. a while back one of our police dispatcher got fired because the call went out for a robbery suspect and the suspect got away because when they found the guy they let him go mistakenly because he had no accent to his voice as well as the above mentioned differences in physical features, even know the witness to the robbery gave his location and description and gave an ID of him, the guy was wanted on 3 separate felonies in addition to the robbery, i was listening to my police scanner last night when a call came through, they said be on the lookout for a brown chevy blazer occupied by 3 black males in their 20's wanted for the theft of 4 rolls of scratch off lottery tickets taken from a local bp station, the new dispatcher would of lost his job also if he would of put the call out for 3 African American Males instead of black males, see, with the police, an accurate description is extremely vital in the pursuit of a suspect, sometimes they are actually looking for an African-American but now police have new policy in that they have to repeat twice and acknowledge Black verses African-American just because of past problems with suspects getting away due to mistaken identity. i have an African friend that moved here from Zimbabwe and he looks completely different and even he ( Sheriae) don't understand it, he says when he asks an African American what part of African they are from and they say they never been to Africa he gets confused and just shakes his head, we talk a lot about his country and he laughs, he says why on earth would they want to be called that, he says he hated his country and life is very hard over there, he told me Blacks from here would not last 2 days where he is from, he had no plumbing, no clean drinking water, no electric, very little food and lived in constant fear of being killed bu people in rival areas, and his living conditions were terrible at best... a very tough place to live... he told me so many horror stories. but he completely understands why the police HAVE TO distinguish between blacks verses true African Americans just because the nature of their job and things mentioned in this post. when dispatch is looking for an African American they now also have to tell what country of origin in Africa they are from to make it easier to catch the perp.
