False lashes destroying real ones?

Ok so i have short thin lashes to begin with that are barely noticeable even with mascara so i have been using the false ones, i love the way they look but, i notice when i took them off my real lashes were noticeably shorter, i think it may be from the glue? Anyhow my real lashes are even more short now but i still wanna wear my real ones, is there any way i can prevent this from happening? I bought an adhesive remover and i use that, maybe i was just tugging to hard?
