Whats the point in being civil, upbeat and positive in my local community if some people react negatively?

It sounds like you're doing all the right things, but maybe you're trying to please everybody, and that's not possible. I'm sure that if you give it time you'll make a few friends. It's not like everybody up there is nasty. Look at Ringo Starr. Or at least George Harrison.
